UNC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SIGNS THREE RECRUITS

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The University of North Carolina women's basketball program signed three players to letters of intent during the early signing period, which ends today. Chrystal Baptist, Carrie Davis and Candace Sutton, all 6-2 or taller, will enroll as Tar Heel freshmen for the 2000-01 season.
"We feel like we got three outstanding inside players," UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "They'll be tremendous additions to our program."
Baptist, a 6-2 guard/forward from Farmville, N.C., averaged 23.4 points and 16 rebounds last season as Farmville Central High compiled a record of 22-3. She is attending Charlotte Christian School this year.
Davis, a 6-4 forward/center, from Franklin, Tenn., led Brentwood High to the quarterfinals of the 1999 state tournament. The district MVP in 1998-99, she averaged 16 points and nine rebounds and was named to the all-region team.
Sutton, a 6-5 center from Kettering, Md., averaged 17 points, 9.1 rebounds and three blocks per game in 1998-99 as Largo High finished 21-2.

  • 05/24/00:A promising sign for the future, incoming 6'5 freshman Candace Sutton has been invited to the 2000 USA Women's Junior National Team Trials. Conducted at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, they begin on June 9th. Sutton is one of 42 selected that will be whittled down to 12. Good luck Candace!

  • 11/15/1999: Chrystal Baptist signed Monday, thanks to the Charlotte Observer for the update. The Heels are three for three.

  • 11/12/1999: Candace Sutton is signed as well. Hello to the frontcourt of the future!

  • 11/11/1999: Carrie Davis signed her letter of intent today. The 6'4 center averaged over 16 points a game and holds the school record in blocked shots. Sounds like exactly what the Heels need in the paint. I'm waiting for an update on Baptist and Sutton. This is one huge class, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2. The Washington Post says Sutton will sign this week.

  • 11/10/1999: The Basketball News Top 50 shows what a fickle business rating talent can be. While they have the same #1 player, Diana Taurasi and other similarities, according to the Basketball News no one in the Top 50 is really considering the Heels. They report Taurasi is basically down to UConn or UCLA

  • 11/04/1999: Bob Gibbons, All-Star Top 100 Girls Report came out. The only UNC commitment is Baptist at #53.

But his #1 player is listing the Heels. Diana Taurasi, a 5-11 G from Chino California has UCLA, UNC, Arizona and UConn on her list.

Others from his list with the Heels under consideration:

      34. Nikki Jett 5-8 PG Columbia (S.C.) Rutgers, UNC, Clemson, UVa, Ky.,
      37. Chelsea Whitaker 5-8 PG Dallas (Texas) Skyline Illinois, Arkansas., UNC, Virginia
      70. Dana Benemon 6-0 PF Regester (Ga.)/Statesboro Florida, Auburn, Alabama, UNC

Duke has an amazing group coming in. Gibbons' ranks Beard at #5, Tillis #10, Craig #35, White #45 and Krapohl at #78. Whew, that is impressive. For State, Rivers is #38 and Johnson #80
