UNC-ASU: Bunting Quotes

TEMPE, Ariz. – North Carolina football coach John Bunting was excited after his Tar Heels overcame 657 total yards by Arizona State to defeat the Sun Devils, 38-35, before a crowd of 42, 128 at Sun Devil Stadium.

Here is what coach Bunting had to say about UNC's second win in five games.

Opening remarks

I've been involved with those (shootouts) before where you have a hard time stopping somebody. And we knew going in their quarterback could throw the ball and he certainly is very talented and he's got a couple of receivers. But, we made a few plays. We made enough plays on defense, and obviously made a lot of plays on offense. They're a talented group on the other side. They've been averaging a lot of points. They turned the ball over a little bit today and that accounts for us being in the ballgame. And their kicker missed some field goals which accounts for us being in the ballgame. Overall, I'm just thrilled with the win. I'll take them any way we can get them right now. Are you kidding me!

We wanted to win no matter how we got it, even if it was a shootout. It was huge for out team morale. We had a little luck on our side with turnovers and field goals, and we made our field goal and that was the difference.

On Durant & the offense

I think Darian played well. But we'll go back there and watch the game (film), and I'm sure there were some throws he'd like to make. Sam Aiken is a great receiver and everybody knows that. But we were able to get another receiver in the game tonight. Zach (Hilton) caught some balls. Jawarski (Pollock) caught some balls, and then Chesley (Borders) made some big catches. Chesley is fast. Chesley is a big receiver. There is a little bit of a mismatch we can create to put Chesley in position to make some plays and he did it.

ASU's defense was fast and strong, probably the fastest we've seen all year. We just kept grinding the ball and we were the team with the most stamina.

On not surrendering

We just kept coming back all night. The crowd noise played a factor but we didn't get discouraged and stayed in the game the whole night. Darian (Durant) and Chesley (Borders) played big and led the offense all night.

I'm proud of everyone's contributions in this effort, this big time effort to get a win out here against a team that had won four football games in a row, and that's a tribute to our kids.

On Answering ASU's scores

They have that ability. They have the ability to do that. Therefore, it's good for their confidence that we got that done, because we should move the ball on a lot of different people.
