Teasley shines in WNBA debut

Posted May 12, 2002

15 points and three assists for Teasley as the Sparks win opening exhibition game.

In her first WNBA preseason game, Nikki Teasley showed exactly why she was a coveted commodity in the recent WNBA draft. In 22 minutes of play, she scored 15 points and had three assists as the defending WNBA champion Sparks opened exhibition season at home against the Phoenix Mercury.

"I was a little nervous early in the day but not when I got here," Teasley told the Los Angeles Times. "It's basketball on a higher level, but I felt familiar with everything. I know we can perform better as a team, and we will."

She tied Lisa Leslie for high scoring honors as the Sparks defeated the Phoenix Mercury 78-69. Two of her assists were on fast breaks where she rifled dazzling passes to post players.

"She is everything we expected her to be," Sparks coach Michael Cooper told the LA Times. "She's going to be a special player. She's just going to get better and better."

The Sparks open the regular season hosting the New York Liberty on Saturday May 25th at 3pm. The game will be shown nationally on NBC.

In a recent WNBA.com teams preview, they had high praise for Teasley, "Teasley will be the Sparks’ point guard for years. She will be the Magic Johnson that made Kareem Abdul-Jabbar stay interested and excited. Teasley will keep Leslie’s interest until Leslie is ready to retire. If Magic and James Worthy helped Leslie with her game, what do you think Magic will do for Teasley’s game?"
